Although there is no famous watchmaker called Maurice Lacroix, (the brand name was derived from an accountant working for the company), Maurice Lacroix was founded in 1975 by the Swiss Desco Group. Over the last 20 years the brand has steadily risen in stature and consumer appeal with a range of high quality reasonably priced watches including the Pontos and Les Classiques ranges. The brand has also received a great deal of kudos among connoisseurs for the Masterpiece Collection, which are high-end time pieces powered by in-house calibres. This follows a period in the 1990s when the brand turned a significant corner and was able start to call itself a manufacture as it started to make both the cases and the movements for its watches wholly in-house. Not only that, in a market dominated by takeovers of well-known watch brands, Maurice Lacroix remains one of the few truly independent Swiss watchmakers.
