TUDOR was inaugurated by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf for those who aspired to the quality and prestige of a Rolex but could not afford the luxury of one. The company was established in 1946 with customers knowing they had the full assurance and reputation of Rolex behind the brand. The name was derived from the House of TUDOR whose monarchs reigned over England and Wales for 118 years. The TUDOR brand very quickly established a solid niche. 1952 saw the launch of the rugged and reliable TUDOR Oyster Prince, which was chosen by the British Polar Expedition as their watch of choice in the same year. From there TUDOR began an era of designing superlative watches for professions regarded as dangerous, including rescue divers, rally drivers and mining engineers. Following a comprehensive brand repositioning in 2009, the new TUDOR ethos is ‘designed for performance, engineered for elegance’.
