Amplitude

The amplitude of the balance is the number of degrees of rotation of the beat, that is to say each clockwise or counter-clockwise movement of the balance wheel. In a watch which is not running, the balance returns to the centre position.

When in a horizontal position the amplitude of the balance is normal between 275 and 315 degrees. The correct amplitude is essential to the correct operation of the watch, too low and the watch will speed up, too high and the mechanism will be damaged.
