Arabic Numerals

These cover the numbers 0-9 inclusive. They were created by Indian mathematicians and believed to have reached the Arab world via Persia. From the 14th century onwards they were used in Europe to replace the less convenient Roman Numerals which used a combination of letters, and towards the 18th century they were widely adopted for watches because of their greater creative potential. Modern watches however use either Roman or Arabic numerals.
