Radium

A radio-luminescent metal Radium was discovered by Pierre and Marie Curie and gives off a soft blue light when it is placed in a dark environment.

It was applied to the hands and markers on watches up until the 1960’s to make them viewable in low light conditions.
In the second half of the 20th century it was replaced by other much less radioactive alternatives such as Luminova pigment.
